RAYAGADA: Government-run schools and hostels in tribal districts of Odisha often paint a sorry picture in terms of infrastructure and education facilities. However, the facilities in Rayagada sub-division speak a different story.
The well-equipped schools and hostel buildings built on the initiation of Integrated Tribal Development Agencies (ITDA) are attracting children towards education.
Besides the education complex for girls of Kansur under Kalyansinghpur block, which has been built in the lap of nature, more than 100 school hostel buildings equipped with all facilities under Rayagada ITDA are pulling tribal children to pursue education.
Rayagada Sub-Collector Muralidhar Swain, who is in charge of Project Administrator of ITDA, said 66 hostel buildings (100-bed capacity) have been completed phase-wise from 2009-10 at an estimated cost of `27.32 crore.
Though there was no paucity of funds, the progress of construction works was sluggish. Swain said the department has completed 152 of the targeted 156 hostel buildings. The pace of development on education front ensured Rayagada ITDA the top spot in the list of 21 ITDAs in Odisha, he added.
Kashipur, Rayagada, Kalyansinghpur and Kolnara blocks come under Rayagada ITDA. Out of 156 hostel buildings, 72 are meant for tribal boys and the rest for tribal girls.
With an aim to attract children to schools and generate interest among them, the State Government stressed on improved education facilities in their own natural surrounding with a modern touch, said Collector Jagannath Mohanty.
