BHUBANESWAR: Suspected Maoists on Thursday night killed a businessman at Dandabadi village under Baipariguda police limits in Odisha’s Koraput district.
The killing of the businessman, which came hours before the 12-hour bandh call given by the rebels in Nuapada, Kalahandi and Nabarangpur on Friday, – has come as fresh challenge to the state police and Central para-military forces engaged in Operation Green Hunt, a joint anti-Maoist drive.
According to reports, a group of rebels came to Dandabadi village late on Thursday night, dragged the businessman Bapi Samanta and shot him dead. The deceased’s body was found by the villagers on the outskirts of the village on Friday morning.
Sources said the ultras killed Bapi suspecting him to be a police informer.
Reports said the 12-bandh call given by the Nuapada-Mainpur division of the Maoists has affected normal life in the Nuapada, Kalahandi and Nabarangpur districts. Vehicular traffic has come to a grinding halt, causing immense inconvenience to passengers.
Official attendance in government and private offices has also been affected with many staff members preferring to stay at their homes fearing backlash by the Maoists.
In December, the Maoists had set on fire three mobile towers in Baipariguda area.
In another development, Maoists posters were on Friday found in Lanjigarh and Muniguda area in Kalahandi and Rayagada districts, respectively. In the posters the rebels said the police had killed some tribals in Kalahandi, Nuapada and Rayagada districts recently in fake encounters.
