Koraput: A day after arresting five persons for selling SIM cards without verifying the identity proof of the customers, police in Rayagada district continued its raid on various SIM card selling shops across the district on Monday.
“During our raids on Sunday it was found that the traders did not maintain any record of SIM card transactions and names of customers. Neither have they kept any document to support the identity of the customer, nor any photograph,” said SDPO (Rayagada) Y Jagannath Rao.
He said police had already given directions to SIM card sellers across the district to ensure that they abide by the norms and follow a set procedure while selling SIM cards. He added that they should also keep in mind that these could be used by some miscreants in crimes.
According to police, there are many instances, in which police seek call details to find the whereabouts of the criminals to investigate a case. The cellphone number also helps in tracing the identity of a suspect. However, if the criminal has bought a SIM card using fake identity proof, it becomes difficult for the police to trace the person, said police.
“Recently, in a kidnap case when we trace the mobile number it was found that the SIM was sold without any document. Often, miscreants obtain SIM cards without any document and threaten people by identifying themselves as Maoists to make a quick buck,” the SDPO said.
