Kraput: Locals in the Maoist-hit Narayanpatna block of Koraput district have started protesting against the rebels for killing innocent tribals by branding them as police informers and stalling development work in the area.
Alleging that the Maoists are misguiding the youths, thousands of locals, including children and the elderly, took out a massive rally under the banner of Naxal Hinsa Prapidita Manch (NHPM) at Narayanpatna on Monday and submitted a memorandum to the block development officer (Narayanpatna) Hemant Kumar Singh and SDPO (Laxmipur) Hemant Kumar Padhi addressed to the chief minister demanding quick development of the region.
“The Naxals are misguiding tribals and using them as a shield to execute their offensives. Development activities have been stalled in the area due to the presence of the Maoists,” stated the memorandum.
According to the memorandum, capitalising on the remoteness and underdevelopment of the region, some outsiders misguide tribals of Narayanpatna for their own benefit. Innocent tribal are being killed on charges of being police informers. While several villages in remote areas are without road, electricity, safe drinking water facility and healthcare facilities, Maoist violence have destroyed peace in the region, it stated.
Owing to Maoist threat, several families have fled the region leaving behind their home and agriculture land. We oppose mindless killings of the Maoists and need peace and development in the region. “It’s high time that the government should intervene and address the region’s problem,” the agitating villagers said.
The anti-Maoist rally of the villagers took everyone by surprise as rebels considered Narayanpatna as their liberated zone. Police said the Maoists had always enjoyed villagers support in Narayanpatna and as of now the villagers have realised that they got nothing by supporting the rebels, they have raised voice against the Maoists.
Rebels are already on the backfoot in Narayanpatna owing to extensive combing operations and villagers withdrawing support from the Maoists will create problem for the rebels trying to regain their lost base, said Padhi. “We are keeping a close watch on the developments and security personnel have been kept on high alert,” he added.
Officials said the district administration has taken up several development work like rural electrification, construction of roads, drinking water facility and irrigation facility by constructing check-dams among others in interior villages of Narayanpatna. “We have started penetrating interior villages and the infrastructure will be strengthened,” the BDO said.
