Koraput: Vehicular movement was hit for the sixth consecutive day on Wednesday between Koraput and Rayagada after a trailer truck carrying a transformer weighing around 80 tonne broke down at Gumma Ghat Road on NH-326. Though on Wednesday the administration used heavy cranes to remove the trailer from the road, till evening the work was incomplete.
“Two big cranes have been pressed into service and our officials are monitoring the entire operation since morning to clear the blockade. Traffic will resume on the road soon,” said collector (Rayagada) Jagannath Mohanty.
Sources said a trailer truck which was on its way to Laxmipur in Koraput district from Bhubaneswar carrying the transformer to be installed at a sub-station in Laxmipur developed up a snag at the Gumma Ghat road, about 25 km from Rayagada, owing to a mechanical failure on January 15 and since then road communication between Koraput and Rayagada has been snapped.
Bus services between Koraput and Rayagada has remained suspended and over 500 long route trucks are stranded on either side of the road since January 15. On Tuesday, drivers of stranded trucks had approached the district collector to take necessary steps to clear the blockade as they have been stuck for past several days.
Sources said commuters, including locals, have been a tiring time since the blockade as road communication between Koraput and Rayagada has been completely paralysed.
While movement of essential goods like medicines, milk, vegetables between Koraput and Rayagada has remained hit for the past six days, the worst sufferers are the patients from Kashipur and Tikri because they are unable to go to the district headquarters hospital at Rayagada. “Even motorcycles can’t pass,” said Jagadish Naik, a Kashipur resident.
However, officials said as the transformer was of around 80 tonne it took time to arrange heavy cranes and other machines to remove the vehicle from the spot. “The ghat road is not fit for plying of such heavy vehicles for which it broke down. While it took time to arrange heavy cranes and technical people to remove the blockade, the contractor concerned who was transporting the transformer also remained incommunicado,” the collector said.
