Bhubaneswar: People of Jarapada in Angul district on Wednesday staged a rail roko demanding stoppage of Bhubaneswar-Balangir Intercity Express and Puri-Sambalpur Intercity Express at Jarapada railway station.
The agitators under the banner of Anchalika Bikash Parishad sat on the tracks for more than eight hours disrupting train traffic between Sambalpur and Angul.
Jarapada sarpanch and president of the outfit Narayan Sahu said they had been demanding stoppage of Express trains at the railway station since 2016, but in vain.
“People of around 40 panchayats face a harrowing time as neither Intercity nor Express trains stop here. For better communication and development of our area, stoppage of more trains is the need of the hour,” he said.
Six trains were short terminated and partially cancelled because of the rail roko.
East Coast Railway (ECoR) sources said Sambalpur-Puri Intercity Express was short terminated at Boinda and Rourkela-Bhubaneswar Intercity Express at Rairakhol while Puri-Sambalpur Intercity Express was cancelled between Puri and Sambalpur due to non-arrival of connecting trains.
Similarly, Bhubaneswar-Rourkela-Bhubaneswar Intercity Express was cancelled between Rairakhol and Puri from both sides and Bhubaneswar-Balangir Intercity Express was short terminated at Angul. The Bhubaneswar-Balangir-Bhubaneswar Intercity Express too was cancelled between Angul and Balangir from both sides.
“The agitators call off the stir following assurance from railway officials. The tracks were cleared after 2.30pm,” said IIC of Jarapada police station P N Lenka.
